WWFAG is dedicated to raising awareness and respectful resistance to the Mt Challenger Wind Farm — a two-location wind farm proposed for the Whitsundays, first brought to community attention on 16 October 2025.

What we know
About the Mt Challenger Wind Farm Proposal
Whitsundays New Skyline?

The Mt Challenger Wind Farm is a proposed wind turbine development by Alinta Energy in the Whitsundays region of North Queensland.

What is currently known is that the proposal involves two separate project locations — Mt Challenger and Crystal Brook / Kelsey Creek — with plans for up to 30 industrial wind turbines, each reaching approximately 240 metres in height. Several of the proposed turbine locations are close to existing rural homes and properties, with some situated within 1.5 kilometres of residences and less than 9 kilometres from Proserpine.

The project area is characterised by rural homes, working farmland, wildlife habitat, tourism routes, and community infrastructure, and sits within a cyclone-prone region. Residents have raised concerns about potential impacts on amenity, landscape character, wildlife, property values, safety, and long-term liveability.

Community awareness of the proposal began in mid-October 2025 following limited and poorly attended public consultation. Since then, significant concerns have emerged about the accuracy of information provided, the framing of the project as a single site, and the adequacy and independence of the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) process.

The proposal is currently at an early stage, with a Met Mast Development Application lodged to collect wind data. While the met mast is described as temporary, it is widely understood to be a critical enabling step toward a future wind farm development application.

Local residents have formed the Whitsunday Wind Farm Action Group (WWFAG) to share information, support community participation, and advocate that:

This is not the right location for a wind farm!

Thousands of residents have signed petitions and made submissions calling for transparency, proper assessment, and genuine consideration of community impacts before any further approvals are granted.
